Helping Your Teen Thrive: Discover Essential Touchstones’ After-School Adolescent IOP

Parenting a teenager can be both rewarding and challenging, especially when your child is struggling with emotional regulation. In today’s fast-paced world, teens often face stressors that can overwhelm them, making it difficult to cope effectively. If you’ve noticed your child grappling with stress and emotional ups and downs, and weekly therapy sessions aren’t quite cutting it, Essential Touchstones’ Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) might be the answer you’re looking for.

Tailored After-School Support

Our Adolescent IOP is designed to fit seamlessly into your family’s busy schedule. Held after school hours, it allows your teen to receive the care and support they need without disrupting their daily routine. This program is an excellent option for families seeking more focused and intensive support than what traditional weekly therapy can provide.

Comprehensive Care in a 10-Week Program

The 10-week program at Essential Touchstones is thorough and all-encompassing. It begins with an initial assessment and psychological evaluation to understand your teen’s unique needs. The journey then continues with a combination of individual therapy, family therapy, group therapy, and peer support sessions. This multi-faceted approach ensures that every aspect of your teen’s well-being is addressed.

More Than Just Coping – Learning and Growing

In our Adolescent IOP, your child will learn more than just coping mechanisms. They’ll gain valuable life skills, such as emotional regulation, stress management, and effective communication. These skills are not only crucial for navigating the challenges of adolescence but also lay the foundation for a healthier, more resilient adulthood.

Building Valuable Peer Relationships

One of the unique aspects of our IOP is the emphasis on peer support. Adolescence is a time when relationships with peers become increasingly important. Our program facilitates the development of these relationships in a healthy, supportive environment, allowing your teen to connect with others facing similar challenges.

Family Involvement for Lasting Change

At Essential Touchstones, we believe that family involvement is key to the success of any therapeutic program. The Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Treatment at Essential Touchstones

The Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Treatment at Essential Touchstones

Adolescence is a critical time of growth and self-discovery, but it can also be a period of vulnerability. For some young people, the challenges they face can become overwhelming, leading to emotional, behavioral, or mental health issues. At Essential Touchstones, we understand these complexities and have curated a specialized Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) to address and support these unique needs.

Embarking on the IOP Journey

The journey into our IOP begins with a thorough Initial Assessment. This essential step ensures that every adolescent admitted to our program truly stands to benefit from it. The initial session with our IOP Coordinator is a collaborative space where both the patient and their parents come together to map out the path ahead.

Navigating Diagnosis with Psychological Evaluation

Understanding the root cause is pivotal for effective treatment. Our three-fold Psychological Evaluation process ensures a comprehensive assessment:

1. Intake Assessment with a Clinical Psychologist: A deep dive into the patient’s history, challenges, and needs.

2. Battery of Testing Assigned by Psychologist: Tailored tests to pinpoint specific issues and their intensity.

3. Test and Treatment Plan Review: A session where results are deciphered and a treatment plan is collaboratively constructed.

It’s worth noting that if the adolescent has undergone a psychological evaluation at another reputed facility in the past six months, we can seamlessly integrate those findings into our treatment strategy. Our esteemed clinical psychologists, Dr. Alyssa Killebrew, Ph.D., and Dr. Taban Salem, Ph.D., bring a wealth of experience to these evaluations, ensuring accuracy and empathy at every step.

Harnessing the Power of Individual Therapy

Therapy is a transformative tool, and at Essential Touchstones, we prioritize Individual Therapy. Unlike larger group settings, one-on-one sessions allow therapists to delve deeper into individual challenges, triggers, and aspirations. With a minimum commitment of one hour per week for the ten-week duration of the program, adolescents have the opportunity to build a trusting relationship with their therapist, fostering an environment of genuine growth and healing.

Why Essential Touchstones?

Adolescence is a time of turbulence and transition. It’s a period where the right support can mean the difference between feeling lost and finding one’s way. Our Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Treatment is not just about addressing challenges; it’s about equipping young individuals with the tools, understanding, and resilience to navigate the road ahead.

At Essential Touchstones, we don’t just treat; we transform. Join us on this journey of healing and empowerment.

ADHD Unpacked: Symptoms, Misconceptions, and Effective Treatments

ADHD Unpacked: Symptoms, Misconceptions, and Effective Treatments

In recent years, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, commonly known as ADHD, has become a frequent topic of discussion. While awareness is rising, many misunderstandings persist. At Essential Touchstones, we aim to shed light on ADHD, providing clarity on symptoms, debunking myths, and exploring effective treatments.

Understanding ADHD

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects both children and adults. It’s characterized by symptoms of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. It’s essential to remember that everyone may experience these symptoms at some point; however, for ADHD-diagnosed individuals, these symptoms are chronic, severe, and can significantly interfere with daily activities.

Symptoms of ADHD

ADHD symptoms can be grouped into two main categories:

1. Inattentive Type:

   – Easily distracted and misses details.

   – Difficulty focusing on one task.

   – Often seems to not listen when spoken to.

   – Difficulty organizing tasks.

   – Forgetful in daily activities.

2. Hyperactive-Impulsive Type:

   – Fidgeting or tapping hands or feet.

   – Inability to sit still.

   – Talks excessively.

   – Interrupts or intrudes on others’ conversations or games.

   – Makes decisions without thinking them through.

Many individuals exhibit symptoms from both categories and are considered to have the Combined Presentation of ADHD.

Common Misconceptions about ADHD

“People with ADHD are just lazy.”

ADHD is not a reflection of an individual’s motivation or work ethic. It’s a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting the brain’s executive functions.

“”Only hyperactive children have ADHD.””

Adults can have ADHD, and not all individuals with ADHD exhibit hyperactivity. Many struggle primarily with inattention.

“”ADHD isn’t a real disorder.””

ADHD is recognized by major medical associations and is diagnosed based on strict criteria.

Effective Treatments for ADHD

1. Medication: Stimulant and non-stimulant medications can help increase the brain’s dopamine and norepinephrine levels, improving attention and focus.

2. Behavioral Therapy: This involves working with a therapist to develop coping strategies and skills to manage symptoms.

3. Psychoeducation: Understanding ADHD can empower those with the disorder and their families to cope more effectively.

4. Environmental Adjustments: Creating structured and organized environments can help manage symptoms. This might involve setting up reminders, breaking tasks into steps, or using tools like calendars.

5. Diet and Nutrition: Some studies suggest certain food additives, dyes, and preservatives might increase hyperactive behavior in some children. A balanced diet and consistent routine can potentially help manage symptoms.

ADHD is a complex disorder that requires a comprehensive understanding to ensure those affected receive the care and support they need. Essential Touchstones is committed to providing resources and treatments that address ADHD holistically, taking into account the unique needs of each individual. If you or a loved one are struggling with ADHD, reach out to us to see how we can help on your journey to better mental well-being.

Comprehensive Testing Center of Excellence

Comprehensive Testing Center of Excellence

It has long been part of the mission of Killebrew Psychological Services and Essential Touchstones to provide a Comprehensive Testing Center of Excellence for the residents of Ridgeland, MS, and the surrounding areas. After an initial intake session, we hand select a battery of tests from the following, based on the individual patient’s needs:

 Gold-standard autism spectrum assessments, including:

  • An age-appropriate play and/or activity-based test combined with interview questions, which is conducted with the patient (the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Second Edition). This test is conducted by Dr. Salem, a licensed clinical psychologist, to evaluate communication skills, social interaction, and imaginative use of materials.
  • A comprehensive clinical interview conducted with the patient’s parents (the Autism Spectrum Interview – Revised)
  • Reliable and valid parent and teacher report measures
  • In order to diagnose specific learning disorders and intellectual disabilities, a range of tests of intelligence and academic achievement may be used. The ideal tests are chosen based on the individual patient and requirements of schools.
  •  Computer-based tests for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
  •  The most up-to-date, valid, and reliable assessments of personality and symptoms.
  •  In-depth clinical interviews conducted or directly supervised by a licensed clinical psychologist to assess for specific diagnoses.

After testing, we develop a tailor-made report and sit down with each patient or family one-on-one for a feedback session. During these sessions we go over the measures given, the results, any diagnoses, and we talk through personalized recommendations and next steps for the patient or family. Attachment Sensitivity and Attachments Styles

Attachment Sensitivity and Attachments Styles

Bowen and Ainsworth, in the early 1930s, coined the psychological term attachment theory which means, “an emotional bond within a human relationship.” A human being’s first attachment is often established during the first year of life with their primary caregiver.

  • Attachment behavior in adults towards the child includes responding sensitively and appropriately to the child’s needs.  Such behavior appears universal across cultures.
  • Attachment theory explains how the parent-child relationship emerges and influences subsequent development.
  • Attachments are most likely to form with those who responded accurately to the baby’s signals, not the person they spent more time with. Schaffer and Emerson called this sensitive responsiveness.
  • Attachment is characterized by specific behaviors in children, such as seeking proximity to the attachment figure when upset or threatened (Bowlby, 1969).
Based on this theory there are 4 basic attachment styles:
  • Secure: self-assured, direct, responsive
  • Preoccupied: self-doubting, anxious, sensitive
  • Anxious: self-sabotaging, unpredictable, isolated
  • Dismissive: self-reliant, avoidant, distant

Preoccupied, anxious and dismissive type can lead to significant relationship problems now and in the future within intimate relationships.
